Radon is a radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell, or taste. It’s created naturally in the ground and is usually harmless when it mixes with outdoor air. But in our homes, schools, and workplaces, radon can get trapped and build up to dangerous levels—putting your health at risk

Radon comes from the breakdown of uranium found in soil and rock. As it rises through the ground, it can enter buildings through cracks, drains, and other openings.

Radon enters buildings through any gap between the ground and the structure, including:

  • Foundation cracks
  • Floor drains
  • Sump pumps
  • Joints in floors or walls

Once inside, it can accumulate—especially in basements and lower levels..

Both the Kootenays & Canada has:

Large areas with high radon potential due to the concentration of uranium in the bedrock.Cold winters and hot summers, which mean we keep windows closed and air sealed tight. Homes built in a way that captures and holds radon inside

Canadians spend a lot of time indoors in tightly sealed homes—making radon exposure among the highest in the world.

You can't see, smell, or taste Radon gas. Health Canada says that Radon levels exceeding 200 Bq/m3 poses as a health risks. The only way to truly know if you are risk is to test. Any home can have high Radon levels whether it is new or old. Certain factors can increase the odds, including:

  • Living in a radon-prone area (like much of the Kootenays) with uranium-rich bedrock
  • Having a basement, crawl space, or slab-on-grade foundation
  • Airtight, energy-efficient homes that trap air inside
  • Cracks or openings in the foundation, floor drains, or sump pits
  • Even your neighbour’s radon level can be completely different from yours — it all comes down to your specific house and soil conditions. That’s why Health Canada recommends every home be tested.
